Know Your Scooter

By Jean Butler

Become familiar with the scooter before you ride. Read and understand instructional manuals. Check the controls. Read and understand all safety and warning labels on your scooter. Ride very cautiously until you become familiar with the way the scooter handles. Take turns slowly and give yourself extra stopping distance.

Riding your gas scooter or electric scooter with control and safety will require practice. Anyone that will be riding the scooter needs to know the proper way to ride his or her scooter. This will help ensure that you get the most mileage out of your scooter and that you avoid potential accidents by riding incorrectly. You must learn to stand firm on the scooter but relaxed, keeping your weight between the wheels. Don't stand too close to the front or too far back on the scooter. Be sure to shift your weight to the rear when applying brakes, and lean forward when accelerating. Keep feet apart for more stability.

Gently steer the scooter into your turn without any jerky motions. Adjust your balance to keep the scooter upright. Always approach turns very carefully.

Front brakes provide most of your stopping power. Practice at a safe speed until you are comfortable with how they work.

Ride your scooter in a safe place away from other vehicles and in an area which will not disturb other people or animals. Be sure the riding area is a clean and dry surface. Do not ride in high traffic areas.

Scooting can be a useful, safe and fun way to get around town!

In the last couple of years, a lot of scooters have turned up for sale on eBay and Craig's List... from Vietnam. There are millions of Italian scoots in SE Asia, and a pretty big business in restoration has grown up around Saigon. Some of them even look pretty spiffy! But, my gawd, the horror stories about these restorations! Home-made parts, kilos of Bondo-like filler, even dangerous things (cracked welds, bad brakes, undersized or parted cables, painted-over or hidden casting failures). WATCH OUT.

I have owned about 40 Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha scooters over the years. Given basic maintenance I've generally found them to be quite reliable. Scooter owners tend to be more hands off than motorcycle owners, which is fine as long as the maintenance still gets done. A well maintained scooter may go 50,000 miles or more before a major rebuild. A poorly maintained scooter won't even last 5000 miles.

What changes to I need for high altitude? This doesn't come up very often, but I though I'd throw it in anyway. At high altitudes (above ~4000 ft), your scooter will start starving for air. You'll need to place a smaller main jet in the carb, so that it will take in less fuel. A good rule of thumb is to reduce the size of the main jet by ~10% and see if that works.

here is a reason that gas powered scooters are the standard for urban transportation in so many areas of the world. With many high-powered engines available, many have found a gas powered scooter that fits their needs. Do you live in a medium sized to big city, where parking is commonly an issue? What if all you had to do is find a space literally the size of a coffee table? Imagine reducing the stress of big-city living by this simple gesture. Are you paranoid about parallel parking? A gas powered scooter could fix your woes.

Next, you'll have to remove the carburetor and clean it. There are a low of tiny fuel and air passageways in the carb that must be clean it order for your scooter to run right. Carefully take the carb apart. This can be relative easy (on a 50cc scooter) or quite difficult (a Riva 180-200 has limited carb access and 8 separate hoses running to the carb). The carb has tiny passages that get gummed up. The scooter just will not run correctly if the carb is not completely clean, so take your time. I use a gallon container of carb dip (you can get a gallon at your local auto supply store for ~$10).

How was the old gas? Did the gasoline smell old? If the scooter has been sitting over a year or so, the gasoline will turn into a varnish-like stuff. Then you'll have some serious cleaning to do. The gasoline will have evaporated for the most part, leaving a sludgy, molassas like substance in the gas tank, petcock, fuel lines, and the carb. All of these parts will have to be cleaned. This is especially a problem in the carburetor. Thoroughly flush out the gas tank and gas lines with new gas. I've had good luck using the old gas (in small quantities at a time) in my truck.

The most important thing to do is regular oil changes for four stroke engines. Two stroke engines consume their engine oil, so you don't have to worry about changing it. Our scooters only hold about a quart of engine oil. The bigger Yamaha scooters have oil filters, but the Hondas do not have filters (just a small screen). Given the small displacement (engine size) of most scooters, they tend to get run hard. The small amount of oil, lack of oil filter and high rpm usage leads to oil breakdown much quicker than your in automobile. I change my scooter oil every 1000 miles. This may sound extreme, but consider two points: How long does it take you to go 1000 miles? Unless you are riding a 250cc scoot on the highway, it will probably take you a few months. It's not like you need to change it every week. If you are putting on a lot of highway miles, the engine is probably not being stressed with a lot of stop-and-go riding. You also are less likely to run the engine through a lot of hot/cold cycles. In this case you may be able to extend the oil change time. But I wouldn't :>)

Electric Motor Scooter or Gas Motor Scooter: How Do They Compare

By Zulu Johnson

Scooters have been traditionally designed with a step through frame, however newer designs made for fun recreation are sleeker and are designed for standing on. They are more just super sized kick scooters with powered engines! From motor-less kick scooters with just a riding pad and a steering wheel these model scooters have evolved into motor powered riding machines. With both gasoline and electric motors, each scooter type has its advantages and disadvantages.

Electric scooters are simple and easy to use. Ride your scooter till the battery goes flat, swap with a spare battery or recharge and use again. This simplicity make for easy use with no knowledge of the inter workings of your electric scooter. Bundle this with the super quiet high performance electric motor; an electric scooter is bound to bring you hours of scooting fun!

Gas motor scooters have the traditional noisy gasoline engine; however they give the wonderful feeling of raw power and top performance. Gas scooters have the advantage of being a very fast motor scooter; reaching speeds of up to 30+ mph. Going out for some serious use of your motorized scooter? Thats find bring extra gas and simply refuel when your tank runs out.

Physically the gas and electric scooters generally look the same, with both seated and stand only designs available. Electric scooters appear to be more compacted and tidy, whereas the gas powered scooters engine takes up more room and has a gas tank attached.

When all things are summed, it comes down to a simple choice as to what motor scooter would suit you best; gas or electric? The electric scooter gives you simplistic fun with easy maintenance and upkeep. Charging your scooter is as simple as plugging into your power outlet before bed. You can also look forward to happy neighbors due to the quietness of the electric scooter with the small sacrifice of speed. Cant slow down? A gas scooter will take you anywhere you want to go at great speeds with the great sound of raw gas power!

Given that most scooters only take a quart of oil - what is the cost of a quart? Even the very best synthetic oil is only $5 a quart. If you have a 125/180/200cc Yamaha, you will also need a ~$6 oil filer. That's only $10! Is that cheap or what? As for oil, use a top quality oil made for smaller engines. I use a top quality synthetic oil (Castrol or Mobil One for instance). Remember that changing your oil is WAY cheaper than replacing your engine.
